Wet Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD)

  • Wet AMD damages eyesight by causing new, weak blood vessels to grow and leak into the back of the eye making it harder to see
  • Wet AMD affects the area of the eye that lets us see details in the centre of our vision
  • LUCENTIS prevents the new, weak blood vessels from growing and leaking and may even repair some of the damage that has been done
  • Wet AMD can progress quickly. Without treatment, the vision loss from Wet AMD can quickly affect your ability to do everyday things like reading, shopping and driving.
  • Wet AMD is a long-term disease and most patients need long-term treatment.

LUCENTIS injections are now available on the Parkside Suite under the care of Mrs Geeta Menon, Consultant Ophthalmologist in charge of the Regional Centre for AMD services.

The drug is administered as an injection into the white part of the eye; the eye will first be numbed with an anaesthetic to prevent pain.

Over the course of treatment, there is a 90% chance of stabilisation of vision and a 30% chance of improvement in vision. Most patients find that there vision remains the same with no further degeneration and for some their vision improves. Around one third of patients will have noticeably improved vision following treatment.
