Snoring

Document Actions
Snoring can be thought of as humorous or a minor nuisance, but for those people living with persistent snoring, it is definitely not a laughing matter and can even destroy relationships.

Snoring imageSnoring disturbs sleep for the snorer as well as those around them, resulting in tiredness, lack of concentration, a reduction in sexual function and in general motivation. The resulting sleep deprivation can also be dangerous for everyday activities such as driving or operating machinery at work.

Snoring affects an estimated 25% of the adult male population who are habitual snorers. Heavy snoring is more common in males and the overweight and increases with age, but chronic snoring may also be an indication of a far more serious problem known as Obstructive Sleep Apnoea Syndrome.

What causes Snoring?
Snoring occurs when the soft tissues or muscles in your airways vibrate due to partial obstruction of the airway at the back of the nose and throat. As you fall asleep, sagging soft palate and uvula vibrate or flutter. Snoring can also be caused by enlarged tonsils and adenoids or nasal blockage.

What is Sleep Apnoea?
Sleep apnoea is periods when you stop breathing whilst asleep. This occurs when muscles in your throat relax during sleep causing the airways to narrow and close. The reduced oxygen in your body briefly wakes you, re-opening your airway and restarting your breathing.

This process can occur numerous times during the night leading to disturbed sleep, resulting in fatigue and decreased quality of life. Sleep apnoea adults can also have increased risk of serious health problems such as heart failure.

The Next Step
It is recommended that you discuss your problem initially with your GP who, if treatment is advised will refer you to Mr Hosni. He will then keep your GP informed of any treatment undertaken.

Technological solutions to an age-old problem
Treatment of snoring involves many factors including lifestyle such as reducing weight and alcohol intake, and general measures such as sleeping on your side and not on your back.
However, in cases where these changes will not be enough, there are the following treatment options available:
  • Radio Frequency Technique – Stiffens the soft palate. This is a minor procedure performed under local anaesthetic.
  • LAUP – laser reduction and reshape of the soft palate. This is a minor procedure performed under local anaesthetic.
  • Tonsillectomy – either reduced in size with laser under local anaesthetic or removed under general anaesthetic.
  • Laser Turbinectomy – laser reduction of the tissue surrounding the entrance to the nose (the turbinates in the nasal cavity). This is a minor procedure performed under local anaesthetic.
  • Septoplasty – operation to straighten the nasal septum to relieved nasal obstruction.
  • CPAP – Continuous Positive Airway Pressure – wearing an oxygen mask whilst sleeping. This aims to stop the airway collapsing during sleep.
